Now the creatures of the world, both great and small, were arguing over which of them was the greatest of all. Some argued that they were the strongest, others that they were the most clever, or the most beautiful, or the tallest, or the fastest, and so on. None of them could agree, and do they begged the gods to tell them who was the greatest among them. The gods themselves debated over it too, and when they decided, they sent Fate down to tell the mortals who was the greatest.
"None of you are worthy of such a title," Fate told them. "Four will soon come, and they will be the greatest of all, and will rule over this world, and all of you will bow before them with respect of their greatness, for they will be blessed by the gods and the Stars. Each will be equal to, yet different from each other. Each will have their own strength and their own responsibilities and power." And then Fate left, leaving the creatures to murmur and whisper amongst themselves, wondering who these four would be.
Nature turned to Time and asked him to creature four new forms for himself, that she would create to rule the mortal realm. He first created Bear, a strong, yet wise creature, with the knowledge of healing which they would share among the other creatures. Next he created a strange, and very large cat, but it had the wings and beak of an eagle. It was majestic, brave, and held the gift of flight within it's grasp. He called it Gryphon. The third being was much like another, already called Lion, but this one was bigger, more intelligent, and quite moral. He called it a Great Lion, then turned to Nature and told her, "This one will be your servant- no, your solider, to protect and fight for your will and balance. Only they will process the authority to enforce your law and your will."
Nature approved of this, but asked, "Where is the fourth? There must be balance."
"I have already shown you the forth, the one you turned down from the beginning, Wolf," Time smirked. "I ask you to create Wolf, and allow me to bestow on them a gift, so they may never fall from my doing. I wish for them to be immortals. However, I understand there must be balance, so they too, should they choose it, will be your servants."
Nature agreed to create Wolf, and so she created the four, as brothers, but something was missing. She told this to Time, and asked him to create a fifth being. He returned to her, in a very strange form, his head hanging low, and shame filling his eyes.
"What is wrong?" Nature asked him.
"I beg you, my friend, do not create this one," he replied. "This one, Man, will only bring destruction, war, and darkness to your world. No good can come from them." *Man was far different from the others. Man was cunning, intelligent, and greedy, but that was only what Time saw in them. Nature saw more.
"Where you see evil, my friend, I see good," Nature told him. "This one will have the free will to choose their own path, and will be guided along no matter which path that is."
So Nature created Men, Great Lions, Gryphon, Wolf, and Bear, and they soon ruled over the mortal realm, both conquering lands, and keeping peace.
Three Little Brothers,
Destined To Be Together,
Fated To Be Each Others Ruin,
Great Lions evolved with Humans and Gryphons, and in some cultures of Terra Ferus, the three are called brother species. Like brothers, there were always rivalries between the three. The Great Lions were jealous that Gryphons could fly, the Gryphons were jealous of the Humans short yet happy lives, for they believed their longevity a curse and because of it, they could not see the beauty in the world that Humans did. Humans were jealous of both. Great Lions were magnificent and mighty, but the Gryphons had similar strength also. How was it fair that Humans be the least of the brothers? Where the others had beauty and might, and flight, the third brother was cunning and devious with the darkest wishes of all.
The Oldest Keep Watch,
As Their Little Brothers Play,
They Guard Them Forever,
Wolves were here before the other Superiors, except Bears and were the immortals of Terra Ferus, the highest of the high. The saying goes that Dog is Man’s best friend, but Wolves and Man are one in the same. A wolf can become human, likewise, a human can become a wolf. Wolves avoided the conflicts of their brothers and ignored their pleas. The Oldest brother became irresponsible and was punished for it.
Bears were here as long as wolves. They are twin brothers, yet enemies. Rather than cause conflict, the Bears avoid their Brother Wolves. Bears are the trustworthy brother and watch over their siblings.
The Youngest Brother and Sister Rest,
While Their Brothers Create Chaos,
And While Mother Also Sleeps.
With these four superiors, to balance the power between them, every few thousand years two would be born to each. Two Wolves, two Humans, two Cats, and two Bears, and two born to the mystics, like the Gryphons. Each one has an opposite of the same species. Male or female, they are always siblings or lovers, and it always ends in the death of one or both of them. The story is that they can only follow one of three paths, together, one will kill the other, they will kill each other, or the ones who are very lucky, simply live out their lives together, balancing each other out. Most follow one of the first two paths.
It is said that these “opposites” can “wake” Nature and restore Terra Ferus’ balance in times of chaos. They are only born when dark times are approaching.
The "Jobs" of the Five Brothers
Basically a dumb down version of all that is this.
-Gryphons are the guardians of all magical beings.
-Great Lions are the army of Nature, though many have drifted away from this holy path.
-Wolves are not only the immortals, but they were meant to watch over and guide their "brothers". They soon became corrupted and ignored their "brothers".
-Bears, at least in Terra Ferus' myths, were the first healers. In fact, Terra Ferus' bears are far different from Earth's. They are more like peaceful nomads, living in tribes.
-Man is seen as either the conqueror or the architect/builder. Either way, they are often greedy, but not always.
*Referring to the race of Man, not man as in the gender, just so you guys know
There are a lot of human races in Terra Ferus, so ordinary humans are referred to as Man in general.
